A degree in philosophy has gained in value when it comes to finding graduate careers, it has emerged.
Statistics from the Higher Education Statistics Agency show that philosophy students are having better graduate opportunities opening up to them than ever before, reports the Guardian.
While philosophy may not have been considered vocational in the past, figures show that the number of philosophy graduates in employment six months after graduating has gone up by 13 per cent between 2002-3 and 2005-6, higher than the nine per cent average over all subject areas.
Philosophy graduates looking for work in property development, business, renting or research are particularly well catered for with the research revealing that 76 per cent more students of philosophy found jobs in 2005-6 compared with 2002-3.
However, in the HESA Destinations of Leavers report released this year it was found that 3.5 years after graduating, medics, lawyers and those who studied education were the most likely to have found employment.
Overall, 88 per cent of those with an undergraduate degree were working with just three per cent presumed unemployed and 15 per cent studying.
The survey found that the most popular sources of finding a job were websites and newspapers, with 27 per cent of graduates in employment saying they used these means to find work.
