academics get considerable pay rise
20-Nov-2007

Academics get considerable pay rise Higher education staff have received a three per cent pay rise taking average earnings to an impressive £42,620 this year.

This takes earnings for these staff to £10,000 pounds more than average earnings for lecturers and £8,000 more than that of some staff in schools, reports the Times Education Supplement.

Pay increases over the past three years now total 13.1 per cent following protests last year leading to a deal to be drawn up between the University and College Union (UCU) and the University and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA).

Sally Hunt, general secretary of the UCU, commented: "Recent improvements to staff pay are a direct result of the union dragging the employers kicking and screaming to make decent offers, and staff will find the idea of UCEA claiming credit for increases that were hard won in the face of employer opposition laughable.

"Without union action, the employers would have sought to increase salaries by less than half the final settlement."

She went on to tell the Times that it all comes down to the fact that educational staff have been poorly treated in terms of fair pay for many years.

Despite the fact that a great deal of progress has been made since the "bitter pay dispute" of 2006, Ms Hunt added that "there is still some way to go".
