government pledges better training for brits
19-Nov-2007

Government pledges better training for Brits The government is set to create as many as 7.5 million training placements as part of the prime minister's pledge to provide "British jobs for British workers", it has emerged.

Aimed at equipping British workers with the means to compete with migrant workers, the initiative will take place over the coming three years and will be funded in part by employers.

The push will include 120,000 apprenticeships for young people under the age of 25, with 30,000 new placements to be created for older applicants.

Over the past decade there has been a significant increase in the number of people in full-time employment, including students.

However, many of the positions have gone to workers from abroad who are better qualified or more highly skilled than British applicants, making the need to create some kind of balance of even greater importance.

John Denham, the government skills secretary, commented: "The primary reason we are expanding skills and training places is to make sure the British economy is prosperous and competitive in the future and to make sure everyone can share in that.

"We would be doing this whether or not migrant labour was available, but this will help ensure that British workers can compete for jobs."
