slashing graduate fee 'could affect poor students'
14-Nov-2007

Slashing graduate fee 'could affect poor students' Fears have been voiced that abolishing the graduate fee in Scotland could adversely affect poorer students, reports the Press Association.

Money from the fee paid by graduates gets put into a fund which is used to help poor students and student leaders have said that scrapping the fee could mean less aid to these students.

Though NUS Scotland has welcomed the Scottish government's plans to abolish the fee, the body has said that the fee had provided £13 million since being established.

In a letter to MSPs, the union stated: "With the loss of this income stream NUS Scotland is concerned that student support payments will be affected.

"We are seeking assurances from the Scottish government that student support levels will not be affected by the loss of this income and that the shortfall will be met by other means."

Meanwhile, more Scottish students are choosing to go to university in Scotland, rather than England, figures from UCAS show, the Scotsman reported.
