A tribunal has ruled that a London club that fired a 20-year-old employee for being too young violated age discrimination laws.

Megan Thomas, 20, alleged that her boss at London's exclusive Eight Members Club where she worked, told her she was too young for the position and that it was a shame he did not meet her several years later.

Now an Employment Tribunal has decided that Ms Thomas was dismissed unfairly and should be awarded damages, though experts have forecast that these will be less than £1,000.

Ms Thomas' solicitor, Lawrence Davies, said: "Young workers get a raw deal in today's society.

"This is the first time the courts have said age discrimination adversely affects the young and young looking as well as the old."

Wide-ranging age discrimination laws were instituted for the first time in the UK last October to protect workers against being discriminated against for being both too old or too young.
