Apple's iPhone is set to be released in the UK today, but has been preceded by a host of fakes and imported devices, according to the domain registrar NetNames.
In the past three days there have been more than 450 auctions on the internet offering iPhones, the company found.
The iPhone combines a mobile phone, camera and internet browser and has proved massively popular in America since being released this summer.
In the US, AT&T has been designated the official service provider for the iPhone, while in the UK it is O2.
Jonathan Robinson, chief operating officer at NetNames, said: "Consumers need to be aware of the threats posed by counterfeit goods and grey market imports online and make sure that they purchase only from reputable sources.
"The growth of online auction sites has unlocked major new opportunities for counterfeiters and grey market traders to move large volumes of products."
Meanwhile, in the US hackers have been at work to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with alternative carriers.
