Winter shortages as staff seek sun

31 Oct 2007

Winter shortages as staff seek sun Employers are experiencing staff shortages in the winter months as large numbers of staff save their leave to take breaks to winter sun destinations.

Students looking for temporary work during their university holidays can take advantage of this shortage, caused by millions of staff taking annual leave right at the end of the year.

According to Lastminute.com, 71 per cent of employees in the UK have yet to take half of their annual leave, while 35 per cent of the website's bookings are due for departure in the final two weeks of the year.

John Bevan, managing director of Lastminute UK, said: "Employers – especially those in London – face major staffing problems with more workers than ever desperate to get away before the end of the year."

In related news, law firm DWF recently urged firms to be vigilant in their treatment of seasonal staff during the Christmas period.

Some suggestions for checks to ensure temporary workers are not mistreated included paying them at least the minimum wage, carrying out risk assessments to prevent possible injury in the workplace and giving an exit interview, among other things.
