young people need better jobs guidance
01-Nov-2007

Young people need better jobs guidance Young people in Britain are not receiving adequate guidance on careers, according to research by The Inspiring Futures Foundation.

It found in a survey that 68 per cent of those asked felt better careers advice should be provided at school, while one third said the guidance they receive should be more useful, reports Onrec.com.

Meanwhile, 90 per cent of students aged between 14 and 18 who know what they want to study at university and are clear about what they intend to do as a job have made their decisions entirely on personal instinct, not as the result of guidance.

This is perhaps what results in 20 per cent of student transferring courses or dropping gout of university during their first year.

"Today, the choices of course and university, in the context of career aspirations, are significantly more complex than before," Andy Airey, chief executive of the Foundation told the website.

"Given the escalating costs of higher education to students, the lack of impartial, personalised and objective advice will result in costly mistakes that could also jeopardise career success," he added.

The research comes after Just IT revealed earlier this week that 90 per cent of students regret not having more tailored advice on the process of applying for jobs before graduating.

Furthermore, seven in ten new graduates were left feeling "stressed" when searching for work.
