Most students and graduates have, or are planning to complete a period of internship as a means to improve their future job prospects.

In a survey carried out by Milkround.com, 90 per cent of the graduates and students asked said they were intending to carry out work experience, if they had not already.

Of the 300 people asked, only 60 per cent said they felt an internship was vital for their chosen career path, with 21 per cent thinking that the accountancy and actuarial industries would put the most emphasis on internships.

Meanwhile, most respondents (56 per cent) said that, despite internships being largely unpaid, they would not make a decision not to do one because of this.

Mike Barnard, a spokesperson for Milkround.com, said: "These results show graduates are prepared to put in the extra effort of completing an internship during or after their studies to ensure they get the job they want.

"With so many people's CVs sporting a degree now, it's important they don't rely on their qualifications to set them apart."

According to the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, there are three different categories of students thinking about their future career possibilities.

There are those who are sure about what they want to do, which is reinforced while at university, those who study something for pleasure without having a set plan for a career, and those whose ideas change and develop as they grow older.
