NUS supports job training overhaul

05 Nov 2007

NUS supports job training overhaul The National Union of Students (NUS) has voiced its support for Gordon Brown's plans to restructure the government's approach to apprenticeships.

In an announcement, the prime minister proposed the provision of up to £3,000 credits for two-thirds of link-pupils and apprenticeships across the UK.

This is good news for students wishing to enhance their job prospects by carrying out further job-specific training.

Gemma Tumelty, president of the NUS, said: We welcome the Government's commitment to equalising financial provision for apprenticeships with that available to undergraduates.

"It is vital that those who could not otherwise afford to stay in education are supported, regardless of which educational route they take."

She added that the government's plans to encourage more employers to join apprenticeship schemes also found support with the NUS.

At the end of last month the NUS also highlighted the fact that many students are "in the dark" over letting laws, with many living in poor conditions without knowing their rights.

"[Students] are among the most financially vulnerable groups in society and are often at the whim of unscrupulous landlords," said Ama Uzowuru, vice-president of NUS Welfare.
