City workers expect their bonuses to be bolstered despite the financial difficulties afflicting the UK this year.

According to City firm Joslin Rowe, financial services workers are expecting bonuses 12 per cent higher than last year, with 74 per cent of those asked saying they predict a rise.

The firm explained that the total bonus figure for Britain to rise to £20.7 billion if the predictions are correct, which could be an encouragement for students looking to find financial services jobs on graduation.

However, Tara Ricks, managing director at Joslin Rowed warned that the estimated may be disproportionate.

"Companies are still absorbing the effect of financial market turmoil, and we should expect lower payouts this year.

"Clearly employees still have overblown bonus expectations. We would anticipate a lot of expectation management in the coming weeks from firms in the sector."

The news comes as the Coming of Wage was released recently by the Social Issues Research Centre, showing that today's students have increased financial pressure on them at university and in their transition to adulthood.
