students' career aspirations 'varied'
26-Oct-2007

Students' career aspirations 'varied' There are three different categories of students when it comes to their thoughts on careers, say new reports.

According to the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), some students have clear ideas about which career path to take that are reinforced while at university.

Some students' ideas change the older they get while others are unsure of what they will do but choose instead to study something for pure enjoyment.

Elspeth Farrar, communications director at AGCAS, said: "The kind of people that come to university career advice services can come from any of those three camps, probably in equal proportions.

"There is a longstanding theoretical underpinning to careers and vocational choice."

She added that the important part of any careers advice is to help individual students to construct ideas for themselves about which industry and workplace they would be best suited to.

Recent research by Milkround.com revealed that 83 per cent of students found internet recruitment websites to be the most useful resource when searching for employment.

Meanwhile, only 26 per cent attended an on-campus employer event and 61 per cent went to careers fairs.
