Employers need to work on IT skills divide

Employers need to work on IT skills divide Recent research has highlighted the need for employers to help workers develop their IT skills in the workplace.

Of the 1,000 respondents to a survey carried out by YouGov on behalf of Samsung, five per cent said their IT skills were poor, while the average employee in the UK said the believed them to be average at best.

As many as one in five people in the UK said that they do not have basic IT facilities at work to be able to carry out their job effectively.

"This would be a prime area for businesses to lose money through either loss of productivity and poor processes," said Graham Paterson, IT business director at Samsung IT.

"Our survey results suggest that organisations need to ensure IT policies are more closely aligned with employee activity and business strategy," he said.

Mr Paterson explained that this would improve on levels of productivity while taking away one of the main causes of "frustration" for employees.

One of the suggestions resulting from the survey was that simple IT training should not be underestimated as a tool to make sure employees can "maximise their output".

Students and graduates could bear this in mind when looking at potential employers and could look at what training is provided in the necessary IT skills before accepting a position.
