Over half of Britons consider employers accessing information about them on sites such as Facebook unethical.
The idea of employers using social networking websites to procure information about their employees would inspire "outrage" in 43 per cent of people in the UK, according to research by Manpower employment specialists.
Indeed, four in ten of all respondents revealed they had already taken measures to limit the amount of personal information accessible by employers on their personal pages precisely due to these types of concerns.
Director of commercial staffing at Manpower UK, Jason Greaves, told Onrec.com: "The world of work is changing and the explosive growth of social networking sites provides a new way for people to communicate with each other.
"Although the primary use of these sites seems to be for personal reasons, employers and employees alike are now using the sites for work purposes, which can save both time and money."
Furthermore, the research found that many people are using networking sites for work-related issues such as generating new business (10 per cent) and researching potential employers (17 per cent).
Recent figures from the Office of National Statistics found that the rate of unemployment was down by 5.4 cent in the quarter from August.
