classifications should 'recognise' success

Classifications should 'recognise' success Changing the way degrees are classified would give employers a clearer picture of graduates' achievements.

According to Pamela Taylor, chair of GuildHE and principal at Newman College of Higher Education, the "hard work" of students in face of increasing financial pressure deserves consideration.

She said: "It is right that we take time to consider how best to present those results so that employers and others can recognise the full range of student achievement."

Ms Taylors comments come as the Measuring and Steering Student Achievement Group (the "Burgess Group") released a report on Tuesday this week. It outlined possible reforms of degree classification.

Suggestions in the report include introducing the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) by 2010 which would be used to measure and record student attainment.

Furthermore, it recommends that the HEAR should be based around the current academic transcript content while also incorporating the European Diploma Supplement.

Chair of the "Burgess Group", Bob Burgess, said that the current system "needs updating" and the report argues "a strong case for change".

He added that general judgements made as part of the current classifications, such as 'upper' and 'lower', limits the use of "wider information" on student and graduates.
