Firms should 'widen talent pool'

18 Oct 2007

Firms should 'widen talent pool' Law firms are advised to seek out job applicants with varied backgrounds.

An industry expert has said that failing to do so could prevent companies from recruiting the top candidates.

Anne Fairweather, head of public policy for the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), expressed the necessity for companies to look in more places for potential employees, reports ClickAJob.com.

Talking to the website, Ms Fairweather said: "I think any wise legal firm should be looking for a wider talent pool and looking for people with different backgrounds, because obviously their experiences may contribute to giving them a different perspective."

The advice comes as the Association of Graduate Recruiters recently reported that graduates are often attracted to positions according to the level of training offered.

It suggested that the transition from university to work can be unsettling and that employers needed to "support" new graduate staff.

Recruitment consultancy Badenoch and Clark also found in research that financial services companies should listen to the benefits most desired by candidates in order to be able to compete with other recruiters.

Managing director at Badenoch and Clark, Neil Wilson, said: "Employers should spend some time evaluating the most attractive benefits for employees and prospective employees."
