Gap Year Job News

Many students are using a year out between school and university to earn money for their studies rather than travelling.

According to a recent poll of 3,500 school-leavers, graduates and students by NatWest bank, over half of students taking a gap year said they plan to spend it saving money rather than going around the world.

This represents over 50,000 students across the UK and for many it is a chance to make headway on the estimated £35,000 of debt they will rack up while at university.

With increased financial pressure from a hike in tuition fees, 55 per cent of prospective students said they were unprepared for university.

Furthermore, a third of graduates said they would have reconsidered going to university if they knew how much debt it would get them into.

The poll found that 17 per cent of school leavers thought it would take as long as a decade to repay money they had borrowed to fund them through university.

Recent surveys have found that many students take up part time work during term time as another way to raise cash to support them through university.
