Planning expected spending can help those taking a gap year to better manage their funds, gapadvice.org said last week.

According to Phil Murray, director of the company, budgeting for a year out can be a "daunting" prospect, although many to succeed in covering costs without relying on other people.

He said: "It makes sense to work out your daily, weekly, monthly costs and stick to it. However, if you are tempted to go over budget you may well go for it, if it is something which you feel you will regret not having done when you return."

Highlighting the expense of using a credit card to help fund a trip, he warned that they can be "expensive if you don't pay it all back each month". He suggested that shopping around for a good debit card deal to avoid charges on ATM machines.

Gapadvice.com found that people between the ages of 18 and 25 spend an average of £3,000 to £4,000 on their gap year or months.

The company offers impartial advice for young people looking to take time away, whether on a gap year, month or week.

A recent survey by NatWest found that 55 per cent of school-leavers were unprepared for the prospect of paying for university.

The same research revealed over half of people planning to take a gap year wish to spend it earning money for university.
