Young people's career plans under wraps

10 Oct 2007

Young people's career plans under wraps Over half of young people in the workplace choose not to discuss their career aspirations with their employers.

A survey by BlessingWhite human resources consultancy found that 62 per cent of employees between the ages of 16 and 24 keep their plans for future jobs confidential.

This figure compares with their older colleagues aged between 35 and 44, 49 per cent of whom said they are open about their career goals with their managers.

Tom Barry, UK managing director of BlessingWhite, said: "Younger workers' non-disclosure could be attributed to a desire to gain experience in a first or second job before moving on.

However, reticence to discuss career plans may not mean young employees are deliberately hiding their intentions. Often they are more focussed on action and achievement and have just not spent the time truly considering what they value in a job."

He added that great communication with employers could help people achieve their career dreams.

Milkround.com recently revealed that four in five young people use internet recruitment websites to look for employment opportunities.
