10-Oct-2007

PwC: UK graduates expect less flexibility Graduates in the UK have been found to expect a less flexible career than others according to PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC).

In a poll of over 3,000 graduates from Britain, the US and China about to start working in a PwC office, only seven per cent from the UK thought they would have flexible hours in their jobs.

This compares with 13 per cent for those in the US and 18 per cent in China.

On average, just five per cent of UK graduates thought they would mostly work from home with 82.5 per cent anticipating they would work normal office hours. This fell to 75 per cent across all respondents.

Personnel manager of reward and benefits at Tesco, Michael Rendell, said: "We need to prepare ourselves for a new generation entering the market place.

"A significantly more mobile generation with differing expectations from an employer, and we will need to adapt to reflect this."

The research also found that 35 per cent of UK graduates and 32 per cent of US graduates thought they would use a second language at work.

This is shown in comparison with Chinese university leavers of whom 87 per cent expect to use another language in the workplace.
