regional 'brain drain' as students hit london

Regional 'brain drain' as students hit London There are fears of a sapping of regional talent as 30 per cent of students plan to move to London after university.

According to a new study by Jobsite recruitment website, in some areas of Britain as many as four in every five university graduates will up sticks and head to the capital.

Furthermore, research found that around 700,000 students plan to move to the big smoke after graduation, attracted by a better choice of jobs, more opportunities for promotion and higher pay.

Norwich and Ipswich were the worst hit as research found that only one in every five students is planning to stay following graduation.

The report stated: "With high-growth employment in many areas outside of London, such as Manchester and Bristol... employers and local government need to do more to promote and attract home-grown talent."

A "brain drain" of this kind could potentially leave regional economies suffering from a lack of skilled and specialised workers.

The news comes as AD Little consultancy released research showing the impact of students on the local economy. It found that students at Manchester's universities contribute £1 billion to the city's economy.
