students enrich local economy and workforce
08-Oct-2007

Students enrich local economy and workforce Students of Manchester's universities contribute £1 billion pounds to the city's economy, supporting local businesses and jobs.

Consultants AD Little carried out research for the University of Manchester which weighed up various factors to estimate the impact of students on the local economy.

A spokesperson for the researchers stressed the importance that the city attracts students and academics to enrich the local workforce and culture.

Angie Robinson, of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said: "[Students] bring increased retail trade, accommodation rentals and they play a part in the jobs market - through part-time working while at university and often taking up careers in Greater Manchester on graduation."

The research found the University of Manchester to have the most significant impact on the economy, with students supporting over 15,000 jobs and spending a total of £836 million a year.

Tom Skinner, of Manchester University's Student Union commented that students play a "big role" in various parts of city life. He said that lots of students take up activities such as volunteering that boost the local community.

Starting at Manchester's four major universities, over 70,000 new student arrivals this year will continue to contribute to the economy of Greater Manchester.
