Running a pub must rate amongst many students’ dream professions, and brewer and pub operator Greene King is offering to help make that dream come true for two graduates.

The Suffolk-based company has launched a pilot industrial placement scheme to prepare new graduates for becoming deputy managers of pubs or hotels.

The 48-week scheme sees the trainees receiving an induction at Greene King’s Bury St Edmunds headquaters before being sent to get hands-on experience in one of the company’s houses in Cheltenham and London.

Terri Hardy, project manager for industrial placements at Greene King, said: "We want to encourage graduates to see the pub industry as an inspiring and viable career choice.

"By the age of 25, our graduates could be running an exciting business with a sizeable team, hundreds of loyal customers and a £1 million turnover."

The training programme will see participants achieving recognised industrial qualifications at certificate IV level, covering areas such as personal licence holding, health and safety and cellar control.

Mr Hardy stressed: "We are keen to encourage the best young people into our company and schemes such as this will provide formal training and also highlights the opportunities that exist within Greene King."

Green King employs around 14,000 people nationwide, at over 750 pubs and hotels.

New applications to the industrial placement scheme are not being accepted, but the company is reporting that it will reopen in November 2007.
