Employment prospects for new graduates of Scottish universities remain strong, according to new figures released on Tuesday.

Data from the Scottish Executive showed that 62 per cent of those taking first degrees at higher education institutions in Scotland last year had found employment in the UK within six months of graduating.

For postgraduates, the figure was 81 per cent. It was 37 per cent for holders of sub-graduate degrees, such as the Higher National Diploma (HND) and Higher National Certificate (HNC).

64 per cent of first degree holders and 85 per cent of postgraduates were found to be working in professional, associate professional or technical capacities. Only nine per cent of first degree graduates went directly into management, compared to eleven per cent of sub-degree graduates.

The figures have been collated by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), and includes data from universities and other higher education institutions, as well as further education colleges and the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council.

The Scottish data is confirmed by a new report published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) this week.

In ‘The Report on Jobs’, the REC declared that the UK labour market continues to grow at a “robust rate”.

REC acting chief executive Helen Reynolds noted: "Ensuring that the UK maintains a vibrant, flexible and modern labour market is key to meeting the ongoing demand for staff highlighted in this month's Report."
