Part Time Job And Holiday Job News

student workers benefit from extended leave
02-Oct-2007

Student workers benefit from extended leave Students working during term-time could get more leave as part of a nationwide extension to holiday entitlement.

From yesterday, statutory leave allowance went up from 20 days to 24 days for full-time workers, rising again in April 2009 to 28 days.

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) have produced a leaflet advising workers on how the increase in leave will benefit them.

In the leaflet, ACAS advises people only working during term time: "You need to work out how many hours [you] work on average over the whole year. For example, if [you] work 40 hours a week for 40 weeks of the year, [you] work a total of 1,600 hours a year. This works out at 33 1/3 hours a week over 48 weeks of the year.

"The employee's holiday entitlement is 4.8 weeks x 33 1/3 hours a week = 160 hours holiday for the year."

Furthermore, for people working part time throughout the year, the guide explains that leave is calculated on a pro-rata basis, meaning that it is allocated according to how much they work.

Part timers may also have leave made up of part days according to when their leave year starts and how their working time has been made up.

In addition, the national minimum wage (NMW) increased yesterday to £5.52 from £5.35 for those over 22 years old and from £4.30 to £4.45 for people aged between 18 and 21.
