North Yorkshire county council's apprenticeship scheme is to be extended this year, providing over a hundred more apprenticeships.

Launched in September last year, the Real Start scheme is aimed at giving young people in the region a way to use the skills they have learned throughout their education.

It allows them a "stepping stone" to employment and has so far helped 70 people, aged between 16 and 24, into council apprenticeships.

Its extension will create 120 more career opportunities which will be deployed over the course of the year.

County councillor, Carl Les said: "We recognise that people are our most valuable resource, and in return young people recognise that an apprenticeship with a dynamic and vibrant organisation like North Yorkshire county council can be a springboard to a rewarding and fulfilling career.”

He explained that young people are important to the long-term improvement of council services as they provide a "new and fresh" perspective.

Apprenticeships with the council, he said, can act as "springboard" to a gratifying onward career.

The Real Start Scheme is supported by Training Provider, the Learning and Skills Council and North East Chamber of Commerce among others.

Local government is one of the largest employers in England, with over 2.1 million employees.
