hain: 'under 25s will get employment benefits'
26-Sep-2007

Hain: 'Under 25s will get employment benefits' Young people looking for jobs will be given short courses to help prepare them, the government has announced.

In an announcement today, Peter Hain, government secretary for work and pensions, said that a deal has been drawn up between Jobcentre Plus and the Prince's Trust to bring benefits to young jobseekers.

The Trust's 'Get Into' courses will be available to jobseekers without having to give up their benefits and will give those enrolling a four week intensive course in a variety of sectors.

Mr Hain said the courses are aimed particularly at disadvantaged young people "in our inner cities" to help ensure they do not end up in a "cycle of economic inactivity and social exclusion".

Martina Milburn, chief executive of the Prince's Trust said: "This scheme will help thousands of young people who want to work but lack the practical skills and experience to get a job."

The secretary for work and pensions added that there are in excess of 600,000 employment vacancies daily in the UK, with the government looking to give the young a chance at them.

Opposition parties seem equally aware of the pressures on young people, with Conservative party MP David Willetts acknowledging the "enormous financial pressure" on today's younger generation.
