east cambridgeshire set for '50% rise in job opportunities'
20-Sep-2007

East Cambridgeshire set for '50% rise in job opportunities' East Cambridgeshire is expected to see a huge increase in the number of jobs available, according to a new study.

An economic model unveiled by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) suggests the area will see a 50 per cent rise in jobs by 2031.

With such a sharp increase in employment opportunities, the region is named as the second fastest growth area in the east of England, with only mid Bedfordshire ranked higher.

By comparison, a 13 per cent increase in jobs available in Forest Heath and a 19 per cent increase in Cambridge is forecast in the same period.

The number of people working in the region is predicted to climb from 28,500 last year to 42,500 by 2031, while the population of the region is also expected to increase significantly. The model predicts the number of inhabitants will rise from 79,700 to around 102,400 within the same time-frame, a total rise of 28.5 per cent.

Economic development officer of East Cambridgeshire District Council, Darren Hill, told Cambridge Evening News there were some key drivers behind the growth.

"Building on the back of the equine sector in Newmarket and being part of the biotechnology cluster based around Cambridge - those are two areas in which there may be opportunities," he commented.

Students hoping to eventually work in either of these sectors may increasingly find interesting job opportunities in this district over the coming years.
