Students aspiring to their dream graduate job may be interested to know that three million people in the UK have turned their hobby into a full-time career.

According to research by Friends Provident, around 25 per of British people aspire to leave their present position to embark on a career based on their favourite hobbies.

It found that most professionals (77 per cent) pay for their pastimes from their wages or savings and, for 32 per cent, their hobbies cost them over £250 per year.

Psychologist Anna Colton said: "Some people also identify with those with high profiles, who have turned their hobbies into professional careers. This may be another reason that hobbies continue to be an important part of UK life."

Christine Foyster, head of wealth management marketing at Friends Provident, commented that there is evidently an "appetite" in the UK for partaking of hobbies outside a career.

She added that, though some manage to turn their pastime into a paying job, "not everyone will be as successful as Lewis Hamilton or JK Rowling".

Students and people in graduate positions may find financial constraints restrict their pursuit of hobbies, though Ms Foyster advises that "saving regularly" is the best way to fund hobbies, rather than paying with credit or loans.
