E-Skills launches IT initiative

18 Sep 2007

E-Skills launches IT initiative E-Skills UK has announced its plan to launch an initiative to change
young peoples attitudes to IT-focussed careers it has emerged.

Named simply Revitalise IT, the employer-led sector skills council run
scheme is aimed at supporting universities in tailoring courses that
will feed into professional careers in IT.

CEO at E-skills UK, Karen Price, said: "The IT and Telecoms sector
makes a vital contribution to the UK's long term prosperity in an
increasingly competitive global economy. At the same time, every year
fewer young people choose to undertake an IT-related degree, with a
drop of around half (46%) since 2001."

The number of people employed in the IT sector in the
UK is nearly double what it was 12 years ago, with the sector now employing around
one million professionals.

Demand is set to increase significantly in the coming years and many employers have expressed concern about the lack of adequately skilled school and university leavers.
