There are a number of things students can do to lower their car insurance costs, an expert has emphasised.
Young people who have just passed their driving test always face higher premiums than older, more experienced drivers.
However, a spokeswoman for Direct Line recently said that there are ways students can cut their costs.
She explained: "Things you can do include buying a car with a smaller engine - older cars and bigger engines tend to be more expensive too - and keeping your mileage down."
Taking part in a Pass Plus scheme can also save the pennies.
The spokewoman continued: "It is a government-run initiative and it is six one-hour sessions. It costs around £100 to take and you can do this and get up to 35 per cent off.
"It's worthwhile doing if you are a young driver.
"From a financial point of view it makes sense, because the average premium for a young male driver is going to be around the £2,000 mark, so if you divide that by three, you are saving around £600."
Experts have also warned students against 'pimping their ride'.
Nicholas Seal of Modified Ride recently emphasised that most companies will not provide car insurance for modified vehicles.
He explained: "As soon as you mention that your car is modified in any way, whether it be alloys or a new engine, most companies do say they are unable to insure you."
