unemployment falls again
13-Sep-2007

Unemployment falls again It seems that it is a good time to be entering the UK job market.

According to research from the Office of National Statistics, British unemployment continued to decrease in the three months to July.

The number of people of working age with jobs rose by 84,000 during this period, bringing the total to an all-time high of 29.1 million.

And there is good news for new graduates still looking for jobs. The number of vacancies also increased during the quarter - by 280,000 from the same period in 2006.

Finally, earnings excluding bonuses also rose - by 3.5 per cent during the three months.

Caroline Flint, employment minister, commented: "Once again we have a strong set of labour market figures with record numbers in work.

"We have made real improvements since 1997 - reducing the number of people claiming unemployment benefit by almost half and seeing numbers on all main out of work benefits fall in total by around a million."

A recent survey by the Higher Education Statistics Agency found that graduates with the highest grades were more likely to find work.

It found that graduates who had achieved the lowest degree classifications were two and a half times more likely to be unemployed six months after graduating than those who had gained first-class degrees.
