A card combining Oyster, credit and cashless facilities may come in handy for students living in London.
The Barclaycard OnePulse can be used instead of an Oyster card to travel around the London transport network. The Oyster function is separate from the cardholder's credit card account, although the same card is used.
The card also has the same credit and security status as a standard chip and PIN credit card for transactions of over £10. It comes with zero per cent interest on purchases for the first six months - and a typical rate of 14.9 per cent APR.
Finally, students and other customers can also use the card to make OneTouch payments for low-value items, using 'contactless' technology. This means purchases of £10 or under can be made by touching the card against a reader and avoiding the need for a PIN or signature.
Shashi Verma, director of fares and ticketing for Transport for London, said: "Since its launch in 2003 the Oyster card has proven to be a huge success with over ten million cards now in circulation.
"This innovative partnership with Barclaycard is another way that Oyster technology can make life more convenient for Londoners, providing them with not only cheaper, easier and more convenient travel but also the ability to make low cost transactions on everyday items."
Antony Jenkins, chief executive of Barclaycard, commented: "I am very excited to launch Barclaycard OnePulse and welcome Londoners to the future of payments in the capital.
"Barclaycard OnePulse will make life easier and more hassle-free for those who live and work in and around London."
A note of caution, however - only certain outlets have the technology available at present to take payments using the new technology.
These currently include Books Etc, Chopd, Coffee Republic, EAT, Krispy Kreme, Threshers and YO! Sushi.
