digital training for journalists
10-Sep-2007

Digital training for journalists Leading figures in the world of journalism have emphasised the need for up-to-date training methods.

Joanne Butcher, chief executive of the National Council for the Training of Journalists, recently emphasised that both traditional and new journalistic skills were important to get ahead in the profession.

As reported by Holdthefrontpage.co.uk, she said: "New media developments mean a wider range of skills are required than ever before.

"The media landscape has exploded. There are now more newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, websites, blogs, podcasts, mobile and video messaging, text-based delivery services than ever before and more are being launched as we speak."

In particular, the NCTJ recognised the need to train the journalists of tomorrow in the art of writing for websites, as well as traditional newspapers.

Ms Butcher explained that there is now "a new online journalism syllabus that relates writing and editing specifically to the online medium".

She continued: "It's light on the technical but it does include the development of sufficient technical ability to create and present stories for the website. It also includes the ability to compile and publish online video and audio reports."

The new training is being recommended to journalists already working within the profession, as well as those students just about to embark on their careers.
