Many students embarking on gap years don't buy travel insurance because they think they're "indestructible", according to one expert.
Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com, warned that in reality, it is often the little unexpected accidents that take people unawares.
He explained that many students say they won't need insurance because they're not going to take part in extreme sports such as bungee jumping or skydiving.
He continued: "But the reality is, most of the claims are for things like people falling off a curb.
"We had an example of someone who fell off a curb in Barcelona and broke their ankle. They weren't insured. It's the little things that will add up."
According to research conducted by gapyear.com, students typically spend more time buying a pen knife than they do insurance.
Company statistics also state that the average gap year for an 18 to 24-year-old costs three to four thousand pounds.
Some 25 per cent of young travelers are thought to embark on their journey uninsured or underinsured.
In extreme cases, this can end up putting their parents' homes at risk as well as their own financial security.
