The winner of an Indian reality talent hunt television show has been awarded the opportunity to earn n university engineering degree.
Arvind Aradhya from Bangalore will study for the qualification at Warwick University after winning the competition ran by the channel NDTV, the BBC reports.
A competition awarding five scholarships to renowned universities in Britain, Scholar Hunt, Destination UK involves a multi-discipline contest and featured over 10,000 entrants.
Having disclosed his ambition to be become an astronaut, 18-year-old Mr Aradhva is the contest's first winner.
Although many Indian students are reported to have opted to study abroad in the last few decades, this trend is expected to change in the coming years as the country begins to emerge as an economic superpower.
Participating universities in the UK set the required academic standards and are completely funding the scholarships, NDTV's Arun Thapar said.
"We wanted to create something that rewards people of merit and intellect," he added.
After winning the competition, Mr Aradhva said: "I think that the people at the university believed in me because they must have had really good reasons to award a scholarship worth £80,000 to someone."
The University of Warwick first took on undergraduates in 1965 and its student population reached over 15,500 by 2003, 20 per cent of which were overseas pupils.
