Part Time Job And Holiday Job News

more students forced to work
23-Aug-2007

More students forced to work Greater numbers of students are forced to work to make it through university, according to new research.

The study, by Yorkshire Bank, found that around 40 per cent of students save for their future while studying.

It looks like the upward trend is set to continue. Researchers found that a huge 94 per cent of freshers plan to work to finance their studies this year.

Many students are also making intelligent long-term choices, even when taking on part-time and irregular work.

Some 19 per cent of students were found to have taken jobs specifically relevant to their future career aims.

It seems that those long university vacations are increasingly turning into working holidays too.

Two-thirds of students questioned choose to work through their holidays - and 35 per cent said they didn't take a foreign break during the summer so they could earn more money at home.

Gary Lumby, head of Retail at Yorkshire Bank, said: "Students are becoming increasingly savvy as they work hard to secure their professional and financial futures.

"Almost a fifthÂ… are so savvy they're making money on their low rate student loans by investing the cash in savings accounts."

Gemma Tumelty, president of the National Union of Students, said: "Students are budgeting carefully and working long hours to make ends meet.

"In contrast to media stereotypes of lazy student life, today's undergraduates work hard and attempt to save in preparation for finding graduate employment, getting on the housing ladder and starting families.

"This often leads to them working through the summer break and abandoning their plans to travel."
