record numbers get uni places

Record numbers get uni places The graduate job market looks set to be flooded with more applicants than ever in the coming years.

A record number of school leavers had their university places confirmed following this year's A-level results, according to applications service Ucas.

Some 316,594 students had places confirmed on August 16th - with 2,807 of these being placed through Clearing.

At peak time, around 70 students were thought to be logging on to the Ucas website every second to track their applications.

Bill Rammell, higher education minister, said: "It is clear that students still understand the value of higher education.

"However, we must remember that the hard work does not stop here. There are still over 30,000 places available with unmatched applicants."

Certain graduate careers were in particularly high demand this year.

As reported by the BBC, the top five most sought-after courses were law, economics, psychology, business management and history.

However, many students will be skeptical regarding Mr Rammell's comment that the record number of placements was "clearly testament to the improved student finance package".

Experts have predicted that many students entering university now will end up graduating with debts of over £30,000.
