Part Time Job And Holiday Job News

social web has widened job hunt

Social web has widened job hunt Social networking sites have widened the pool of contacts for students and other people looking for jobs, an expert has explained.

Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), said that traditionally, people have often heard about job vacancies through friends of friends.

However, social networking websites have made it easier to learn about a wider number of possibilities, she commented.

Ms Fairweather continued: "I think it just makes that pool of people who could possibly tell you something that might be of interest to you a lot wider."

She explained: "It depends very much on the type of job that you're looking for - if you are looking for a job just in the bar down the road, it makes much more sense just to go and ask them.

"But if you are looking for a specific career or if you are being more discerning about what you want, then you have to look a bit harder to find that."

The number of part-time and other jobs advertised in newspapers has fallen substantially in recent years as more and more people are choosing to search online.

While online searching makes many students' job hunts easier, experts also warn that some care should be taken.

In a recent survey by the REC, 86 per cent of employers said that candidates should exercise caution when putting certain information on the internet.
