students should try it careers, says bcs
16-Aug-2007

Students should try IT careers, says BCS Students who have yet to determine their career should think about going into IT, the British Computer Society (BCS) said.

The membership organisation for IT professionals said it is looking to encourage young people and particularly young women to consider a career in the industry.

It pointed out that, unlike many other well paying sectors, IT is open to students who have not followed science based A-levels with technical university degrees.

Dr Mike Rodd, BCS director of Learned Society & External Relations, was quoted by Vnunet as saying: "IT can be a lucrative and satisfying career choice.

"We want young people to know they have not missed the boat on getting into IT just because they did not study the 'right' combination of A Levels, or because they chose to go out to work instead."

Mr Rodd added that there was a range of "exciting roles" in the IT sector that will stretch talented people.

The UK is predicted to have an estimated 40 per cent drop in graduates from IT-related courses in 2009, which is expected to take its toll on the country's economy.

It is hoped that the modest increase in the number of applications in 2007 for computer science undergraduate courses will mark the start of a new trend.
