a-level students should try business, not uni
15-Aug-2007

A-Level students should try business, not uni A-level students should consider entering the world of business rather than university, it has been claimed.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says it will congratulate A-Level students when their results are published tomorrow.

But it has also pointed out that the same students might do well to consider getting a head start in business and begin earning, rather than leave for university.

It said that barely more than a quarter (27.7 per cent) of business owners have a degree, while nearly half manage with GCSE or equivalent professional qualifications.

In fact, an eighth of professional entrepreneurs have no qualifications at all.

Colin Willman, FSB education and skills, was quoted by
Abeceder as saying: "I would like to take this opportunity to remind [A-Level] students that many of our most successful business people never went to University.

"It will be suitable for some students who have passed their A-levels to go on to higher education but other equally successful students will already have their entrepreneurial ideas ready for action.

"If that is the case, it might be better for them to strike while the iron is hot rather than wait three or four years at university, by which time the chance may have passed."

The FSB also criticised the government's plans to get fifty per cent of young people into university, calling this an "arbitrary" target.
