scottish students 'hardest working'
13-Aug-2007

Scottish students 'hardest working' Scottish students are the hardest working in the UK, a new survey is to reveal according The Scotsman.

More than a third of Scottish students are employed for over 25 hours a week, meaning that they work an extra five hours a week compared with the UK average.

The Bank of Scotland's first Student Finance Survey questioned more than 1,000 students from across the UK about their employment habits.

It revealed that around 52 per cent of UK-wide students typically worked, while in Scotland that proportion was much higher at 67 per cent.

As well as being more likely to work, Scottish students who did work were found to work for longer hours than the rest of the UK, at 20 hours a week on average compared to the UK average of 17.8 hours.

Sue Harper, head of student banking at Bank of Scotland, was quoted by the Scotsman as saying: "Student finance has become much more complicated.

"Working during term or through holidays is a financial necessity for many students."
The survey also revealed that, across the UK, more female students (60 per cent) hold down a part-time job than male students (44 per cent) - although boys that do work opt for longer hours and earn more.
