student insurance cheaper in halls
10-Aug-2007

Student insurance cheaper in halls Students looking to save money on insuring their belongings are advised to live in halls if they have the option.

Rhiannon Harris, a spokesperson for Endsleigh, recently explained that off campus insurance is more expensive because of the higher number of variables associated with off-campus living.

Students living in halls of residence are usually protected by a higher level of security, which means insurance costs are cheaper.

According to the latest research by BIBA, around 38,500 out of the 350,000 students setting off to university this September are likely to be burgled during their studies.

However, just 40 per cent of students have adequate contents insurance.

Another insurance pitfall students face is that many don't realise their belongings may not be covered under their parents' household insurance.

Graeme Trudgill, a spokesperson for BIBA, explained: "Many household policies do cover items for students living away from home. But the limits might be quite low and it may not cover high value items like laptops.

"Fifty per cent of students now have a laptop or computer when they move away. They need to check the value of the overall items they are taking compared to the value covered by the policy that the parents have."
