Tech Sector To Create 1,600 New UK Jobs & Apprenticeships

The tech sector is forecast to create 1,600 new IT jobs and apprenticeships in the United Kingdom, according to new investment figures from Prime Minister Theresa May.

The Prime Minister said that the UK has attracted more than £2 billion new inward investment from technology firms which will create hundreds of jobs across the country.

Three of the biggest tech firms to invest in the UK were American cloud computing company Salesforce, United Arab Emirates’ Mubadala and Japan’s NTT Data.

Salesforce alone has pledged investment of £1.9 billion in the UK before the end of 2023 and is set to open a second data centre over here next year.

Announcing the investment figures, the Prime Minister said: “The measures we are announcing will allow innovative British startups to invest in their future, and in the UK, by hiring more skilled people, expanding their business and exporting their expertise across the world.”

“It’s a great time to be in tech in the UK, and our modern Industrial Strategy will drive continued investment, ensuring the nation flourishes in the industries of the future and creating more high-paying jobs,” added Mrs May.

Dr Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade, added further detail, saying: “The UK is already a world-leading destination for tech investment with one tech start-up opening every 50 minutes. Our tech sector, with our strong legal system, skilled workforce and low taxation economy combine with our world class universities to make us the most attractive home for investment in Europe.

“Last month we launched a new online portfolio of opportunities worth £30bn, and in turn this will drive growth and create jobs in our economy,” added Dr Fox.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, also commented: “The UK is home to some of the world’s most innovative companies and I want to make sure that they stay at the forefront of the tech revolution. Britain remains one of the best places to start and grow a company.”

New statistics released by technology firms Tech Nation and Dealroom estimate that more than two million people now work in the digital tech economy.
