Students looking for academic and research jobs when they graduate face tough competition, the latest research suggests.

Many university leavers are keen to enter the world of academia at graduate level, particularly those who want to continue to investigate their university subjects in greater depth.

However, new figures indicate that successful applicants in this field will need that special extra something to stand out from the crowd.

Academic and research jobsite jobs.ac.uk has reported that there are currently over 508,000 people visiting them online every month to look for jobs.

This is a 15 per cent increase on the same time last year.

Andrew Gordon, director of jobs.ac.uk, told Recruiter Magazine: "The way most people approach their careers is changing radically.

"They are increasingly drawn to a range of sectors they may not have explored before because of the interesting jobs available and the opportunities to apply and develop their specialist skills."

He continued: "Talented people are now looking beyond the commercial sector to plan their next career move."

Evidence suggests that graduate applicants are much more likely to secure their top job if they are able to demonstrate prior experience and commitment in the form of work experience or an internship in their chosen sector.
