BT has announced plans to create 1,300 apprenticeships and graduate jobs for young people in the UK.

The hundreds of new graduate vacancies and apprenticeships at BT will be spread across the country but there will be almost 150 in the North East and a further 150 in other parts of east England, accounting for around a quarter of the new positions.

Most of the roles will be within BT itself, but some positions will be with the company’s subsidiaries such as Plusnet and EE.

The positions will encompass a wide range of roles, with everything from customer service, engineering vacancies, TV production work and cyber security jobs on offer. BT say they will use ‘Crystal Maze’ style challenges and virtual reality-based assignments as part of the recruitment process.

Gavin Patterson, chief executive of BT, said: “We’re proud to be leading the industry by investing in training a huge number of people in the digital skills that the UK economy so vitally needs. BT has a rich history of innovation, and it’s an incredibly exciting time to be joining the company as we look towards growing our cyber-security business, developing 5G technologies and enhanced TV content.”

“Our apprenticeship and graduate scheme will equip people with the skills and on the job training they will need to succeed in the future. I’m looking forward to welcoming all our new recruits into the business,” added Mr Patterson.

Commenting on the news, Prime Minister Theresa May, said: “I welcome this announcement from BT. More high-quality apprenticeships means more young people with the vital skills and training to take advantage of the economic opportunities of the future.”

“Our modern Industrial Strategy, in conjunction with business, will help drive developments in fields like Artificial Intelligence and cyber technology, meaning more high-tech jobs and greater prosperity for people across the country,” added Mrs May.

BT now employs over 80,000 people in the UK, making it one of the biggest employers in the nation.

The 1,300 new jobs at BT comes one week after Openreach, a functional division of the telecommunications firm, said it is creating 3,500 trainee engineer jobs in the UK over the next twelve months.
