German discount retailer Lidl is to create hundreds of new full and part time supermarket jobs across the UK with a further round of impressive expansion plans.

Over the next year, Lidl is to renew 30 of its existing 700 UK supermarkets as well as adding a further 50 new stores, bringing an expected 700 new jobs in total.

The chain has already opened at 19 new locations in the last two months as well as announcing further job creation at a new warehouse in Luton. Lidl also has plans to build five more new warehouse to facilitate its UK distribution network.

Lidl’s latest five new outlets at Edinburgh, Hull, Polegate, Rosehill and Stockton were the branches which took the German chain through the 700 store portfolio milestone. With no signs of slowing down, the retailer will increase its UK stores by a further 7 per cent before the end of 2018, taking their count of UK outlets to around 750 by the end of the year.

The massive expansion and the 700 new jobs it will bring are part of an investment of almost £1.5 billion by Lidl in the UK during last year and this year.

Commenting on the new growth spurt, Board Director for Expansion & Development at Lidl UK, Ingo Fischer, said: “As the UK’s fastest growing supermarket, surpassing 700 stores is yet further proof of our ambitious rate of expansion across Britain.”

“It’s great that more people than ever before have access to our high quality, fresh and locally sourced products at incredible value, and that as a result, we’re able to create more jobs for local communities up and down the country,” added Mr Fischer.

Much of Lidl’s success in the UK is driven by strong sales growth, with the company boosting turnover for Christmas 2018 by more than 15 per cent on the previous year. They now command a five per cent share of the UK supermarket share and employ in excess of 20,000 people in full and part time roles across the country.
