Co-op To Create 1,600 New Supermarket Jobs In The UK

Retail chain Co-op has announced a jobs bonanza which will create around 1,600 supermarket vacancies across the United Kingdom.

Co-op Food is to open 100 new stores this year, with an average of 16 supermarket jobs created with each launch.

The huge expansion plan is part of a £160 million investment by the chain which will also see Co-op rejuvenate a further 150 existing stores.

A fifth of the new Co-op Food outlets will be in London but other towns and cities such as Bristol, Plymouth and York are also set to benefit with new vacancies from the retailer.

Co-op's director of portfolio & development, Stuart Hookins, said: “The Co-op's extensive acquisitions and refit programme is a fundamental part of our food strategy. Moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum, our expansion plans for 2018 will mean that the Co-op is on track to have opened at least 100 new stores in each of three consecutive years.”

“With over one million new active members joining us in the last year, we are always looking for new locations to get closer to where our members and customers live and work and to meet their shopping needs conveniently,” added Mr Hookins.

Co-op Food’s chief executive, Jo Whitfield, also commented, saying: “The Co-op is positively responding to the changes occurring within this dynamic sector. Our food business is going from strength to strength in what is clearly a challenging retail market.”

“We have the ambition for our stores to be at the heart of local life, bringing communities together and offering our members and customers great quality products when and where they need them,” concluded Ms Whitfield.

And it isn’t just English regions which will benefit from the Co-op expansion plans; Wales will receive 10 new stores and Scotland will see 18 new outlets open during 2018.

The Scottish expansion will create 275 jobs at Co-op Food with new stores planned for Edinburgh, Glasgow and other areas north of the border.

Commenting on the £28 million investment in the country, John McNeill, divisional managing director for Scotland, said: “We are passionate about serving the many diverse communities across the country and want to give shoppers the opportunity to buy what they want, when they want it, in great looking stores that also give back to the community.”
