Argos has announced that it is looking to fill an extra 400 Christmas vacancies in Reading and Birmingham this year.

The new Xmas jobs are in addition to the 10,000 seasonal roles which the retailer announced last month.

In order to expand its same-day delivery service in the run up to Christmas, Argos is opening two new warehouses in Birmingham and Reading. The warehouses will add a further 250,000 square feet of storage space and will allow them to deliver a range of more than 30,000 products to 6 million more customers on the same or following day to their order.

The two regional fulfilment centres will each create 100 permanent positions in addition to the 400 temporary vacancies which will run into the new year. In total, Argos is now looking for an extra 600 new staff to join their ranks in Birmingham and Reading in the coming weeks.

Demand for Argos’ Fast Track same-day delivery service is already up around 30 per cent on last year, and the retailer and pledges that even products ordered before 1pm on Christmas Eve will be delivered in time for the big day.

Explaining why they were taking on extra staff in these areas, Chief Executive of Argos, John Rogers, said: “Our Reading and Birmingham sites increase our fast track capacity across the UK significantly, which means we can get more products to more customers more quickly. This is great timing for customers with Black Friday and Christmas just around the corner.”

“We are confident this will have a significant, positive commercial impact as well as delighting our customers,” added Mr Rogers.
