Lidl is to create 500 full and part warehouse jobs in Peterborough with the opening of what will be the German supermarket chain’s largest distribution centre in the UK.

The huge 754,000 square feet facility will be Lidl’s 15th distribution centre in the UK and is part of a wider plan to invest almost £1.5 billion over here during the next two years.

An increase in sales of almost 20 per cent over the past year has meant that the firm needs to expand its delivery network. As well as in Peterborough, the company is also building new distribution centres at Bolton in the North West and at Doncaster in Yorkshire.

Lidl is now the UK’s seventh largest supermarket chain and has over 5 per cent of the market share in the country. The Peterborough facility is the sixth distribution centre that the German company has announced over the last twelve months.

Lidl will now submit their plans for the Peterborough distribution to the council for consideration.

Head of warehouse expansion for Lidl, Adrienne Howells, said: “We are very excited about our proposed regional distribution centre in Peterborough. Our expansion across the UK is progressing rapidly, and it’s important we have the right supply chain infrastructure to support this. Peterborough is ideally located and we’re pleased to be bringing more jobs to the local community.”

Earlier this month, fellow German supermarket chain Aldi announced it was opening a new distribution centre in Bedford which would create 400 jobs for the area. The two German grocers now take £1 of every £8 spent in a UK supermarket, up from £1 in every £25 just ten years ago.
